General Description
The University of Exeter, in collaboration with The University of Queensland through the UQ-Exeter Institute, invites applications for a fully funded PhD studentship under the theme of Healthy Living. This prestigious joint doctoral programme offers an exceptional opportunity to work within a world-leading international research partnership addressing global challenges in sustainability and wellbeing.

The project, titled “Statistical AI approaches for optimal health warning systems,” focuses on understanding and modelling the combined effects of environmental stressors such as temperature extremes, humidity, and air quality on human health. The research aims to develop advanced statistical AI methodologies to assess compounded risks and design optimal health warning systems that minimize health impacts.

The successful candidate will benefit from joint supervision by leading researchers from both institutions and will spend at least 12 months at each university during the programme. The project also involves collaboration with external partners including Public Health Scotland and the Met Office, offering access to high-quality data, operational insights, and real-world applications.

The studentship is funded for up to 42 months (3.5 years), with a planned start date of 4 January 2027. Candidates will graduate with a joint PhD degree from both institutions.

Eligibility Criteria

  • A first or upper second-class undergraduate degree (BA/BSc or equivalent) in a relevant discipline
  • Strong academic background suitable for doctoral research
  • Must meet English language requirements if English is not the first language

Required Expertise/Skills

  • Strong foundation in mathematics, statistics, or related quantitative disciplines
  • Interest in statistical AI, environmental epidemiology, and public health research
  • Ability to conduct independent research and work collaboratively in an international environment
  • Analytical thinking and problem-solving skills

Salary Details

  • Full tuition fees covered
  • Annual stipend of £21,805
  • Travel funding up to £15,000
  • Research Training Support Grant (RTSG) of £10,715 over the duration of the programme
