General Description
The University of Plymouth is seeking a skilled, safety-conscious, and experienced Technical Specialist (Skipper) to join its Marine Station team. This role involves the safe and efficient operation of small commercial workboats in support of teaching and research activities. The postholder will ensure full compliance with maritime legislation and operational standards while delivering high-quality support services to students, academic staff, and researchers.
This is a demanding and varied position requiring strong leadership, advanced navigational competence, and a proactive commitment to safety. The successful candidate will play a critical role in facilitating marine-based fieldwork and research, contributing to the university’s academic mission. The role is full-time, permanent, and based on a 37-hour work week.
Eligibility Criteria
Candidates must demonstrate relevant professional experience in vessel operations and maritime environments, with the ability to work in a safety-critical setting. Eligibility includes suitability for a full-time, permanent technical support role within a higher education environment.

Salary details
£39,906 – £46,049 per annum (Grade 7)
