The University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI Perth) is seeking a Researcher to contribute to the “Community Land in Europe” project within the Centre for Mountain Studies. This role offers an opportunity to engage in an internationally significant research initiative examining community land ownership, governance, and sustainable land management across Europe, with a particular emphasis on rural and mountain regions.
The successful candidate will work as part of a collaborative, interdisciplinary research team, contributing to comparative research on land ownership models, community engagement, and socio-economic and environmental outcomes. Responsibilities include designing and conducting qualitative and mixed-methods research, undertaking fieldwork, engaging with stakeholders and community groups, analysing data, and producing high-quality academic outputs such as reports, policy briefs, and peer-reviewed publications. The role also involves contributing to project coordination, participating in international collaborations, and disseminating findings through conferences, workshops, and stakeholder engagement activities.
The Centre for Mountain Studies is internationally recognised for its work on sustainable mountain development, land use, and community resilience. The postholder will contribute to advancing knowledge that informs policy and practice in land reform, community empowerment, and sustainable rural development across Europe.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants should hold a postgraduate qualification (PhD completed or near completion) in a relevant discipline such as geography, environmental studies, rural development, sociology, or a related field. Candidates must demonstrate a strong academic background and the ability to conduct independent research within interdisciplinary frameworks.
Required expertise/skills
Strong experience in qualitative research methods and social science research design is essential. Experience in land use, rural studies, community development, or environmental governance is highly desirable. Candidates should have proven analytical and writing skills, with the ability to produce high-quality academic and policy outputs. Experience of stakeholder engagement, participatory research approaches, and working in international or collaborative research projects is advantageous. Excellent communication and organisational skills are required, along with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Salary details
£37,229 to £42,978 per annum (Grade 6), depending on qualifications and experience
