Newnham College, University of Cambridge, invites applications for its 2027 Research Fellowship in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. This prestigious stipendiary fellowship is intended to support outstanding women researchers at an early stage of their academic careers and is tenable for three years from 1 October 2027. The fellowship is non-renewable.

The Fellowship is open to graduates working in disciplines covered by the following University of Cambridge faculties:

• Classics
• Geography
• History and Philosophy of Science
• Modern and Medieval Languages (including Theoretical and Applied Linguistics)
• Music
• Philosophy

Current or former Newnham College students from across the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences are eligible to apply regardless of the rotational subject listing.

The successful Fellow will undertake independent research, contribute to the academic life of the College, and become a member of Newnham College’s Governing Body during the tenure of the Fellowship. The Fellow is expected to commence the appointment on 1 October 2027. Any request to defer the start date will only be considered for a maximum period of three months.

Newnham College welcomes applications from women of all nationalities and socio-economic backgrounds and particularly encourages applications from candidates from Black, Asian and other minority ethnic communities. The appointment complies with the Equality Act 2010 and the College Charter governing eligibility for this fellowship.

Eligibility Criteria

• Open to women graduates from any university.
• Applicants must be early-career researchers.
• Candidates must have been awarded a PhD or have submitted their PhD thesis by 31 August 2026. Applications from candidates submitting after this date will not be considered.
• Applicants should demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and strong potential for independent research.
• Research must fall within one of the eligible Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences disciplines specified for the 2027 competition.
• Current or former Newnham College students in the wider Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences disciplines may apply irrespective of the subject rotation.
• The successful applicant must normally begin the fellowship on 1 October 2027.

Required expertise/skills

• Excellent academic record with evidence of high-quality research.
• Demonstrated ability to undertake original and independent scholarly research.
• Strong publication potential or research outputs appropriate to career stage.
• Expertise within one of the eligible Arts, Humanities or Social Sciences disciplines.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to contribute to the intellectual and academic community of Newnham College.
