University of Southampton

Location: Highfield Campus, Southampton, United Kingdom

General Description:
The University of Southampton is seeking to appoint a postdoctoral Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow (depending on experience) within the School of Electronics and Computer Science. The successful candidate will join a leading research group working under the supervision of Professor Kees de Groot and Dr Ruomeng Huang.

This role is part of the EXPRESS (Exploiting Single Source Precursors for the Electrochemical Growth of Functional 1D and 2D Metal Dichalcogenide Semiconductors) Programme Grant, a major £10 million, five-year interdisciplinary initiative funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The programme aims to advance the development and application of next-generation semiconductor materials, particularly focusing on 1D and 2D metal dichalcogenides.

The postholder will contribute to cutting-edge research on device fabrication and characterisation of 2D material-based electronic devices. Responsibilities include designing and conducting experiments, analysing and interpreting complex datasets, contributing to collaborative research activities across disciplines, and disseminating findings through high-quality publications and presentations. The role also involves supporting the wider objectives of the EXPRESS programme and engaging with academic and research partners.

This is a full-time, fixed-term position running until 31 July 2028, offering the opportunity to work within a world-leading research environment with strong interdisciplinary collaboration.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • A PhD (or near completion) in Electronics, Physics, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline
  • Demonstrated experience in research involving 2D materials or semiconductor devices
  • Strong background in experimental research and device characterisation
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research team
  • Proven ability to contribute to academic publications and research outputs

Required Expertise/Skills:

  • Expertise in 2D material devices and semiconductor technologies
  • Experimental design and laboratory-based research skills
  • Device fabrication and characterisation techniques
  • Data analysis and interpretation
  • Scientific writing and communication skills
  • Ability to manage research projects and collaborate effectively across teams

Salary Details:
