Research Fellow (111364-0226)

University of Warwick
Coventry, United Kingdom

General Description – include all relevant details from the source
The University of Warwick is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position within the Department of Physics, based at the University of Warwick campus in Coventry. The successful candidate will join the MacPherson THz Group, part of the Ultrafast and Terahertz Photonics Group, to conduct advanced research on the application of terahertz (THz) sensing for skin evaluation.

This research role focuses on developing and applying terahertz sensing technologies to assess skin properties and support emerging medical and biomedical applications. The Research Fellow will work within the THz laboratory environment and contribute to the design and development of a new THz probe currently under development. Responsibilities include developing data acquisition and analysis frameworks, designing equations and models to extract optical parameters from real THz measurements, and supporting the development of user interfaces for the sensing system.

The position involves both laboratory-based research and engagement with potential industrial collaborators interested in applying THz sensing technologies. The successful candidate will collaborate with academic colleagues and contribute to the group’s broader research agenda in terahertz photonics and medical sensing technologies.

The Department of Physics at the University of Warwick is a dynamic academic environment with more than 200 academic, research, technical, and professional services staff, over 800 undergraduate students, and approximately 200 postgraduate research students. The department is committed to maintaining excellence in teaching and research while fostering a diverse and inclusive community. It holds an Athena SWAN Silver Award and an Institute of Physics Inclusion Award recognizing its work in advancing equality and inclusion.

The position is offered on a fixed-term contract and is available for candidates who have completed or are close to completing a PhD. Candidates nearing completion of their doctoral degree may initially be appointed at Research Assistant level until confirmation of the PhD award. The role supports flexible working arrangements, and part-time or job-share applications will be considered.

Eligibility Criteria

  • A strong academic background with an undergraduate degree in Physics or a closely related discipline.

  • A PhD in Physics or a relevant field, or candidates who are close to submitting their PhD thesis.

  • Ability to undertake independent and collaborative research in advanced sensing technologies.

Required expertise/skills

  • Expertise in terahertz (THz) data acquisition and data analysis.

  • Strong programming skills with the ability to develop user interfaces for scientific instrumentation.

  • Understanding of the physics of THz light interactions with biological materials, particularly skin.

  • Ability to develop mathematical models or equations to extract optical parameters from experimental THz data.

  • Experience controlling instrumentation through Python.

  • Familiarity with robotics systems and experience with ROS1 or ROS2 is desirable.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills for collaborative research and industry engagement.

Salary details
£35,608 to £46,049 per annum (Grade 6). Candidates who have not yet been awarded their PhD may initially be appointed at Research Assistant level at the highest spinal point of Grade 5 (£34,610 per annum) until their doctoral award is confirmed.
