Research Associate x 2 – Scientific Progress and Artificial Intelligence (PACE Project)
University of York
York, United Kingdom
The University of York is recruiting two Postdoctoral Research Associates to join an ERC-funded research project titled “Scientific Progress and Artificial Intelligence: A Capabilities-Based Ethnographic Epistemology” (PACE), based in the Department of Philosophy.
This is a fixed-term appointment for three years, designed to support advanced interdisciplinary research into how artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping scientific practice. The project focuses on understanding scientific capabilities rather than only theories or models, examining how these abilities are developed, extended, or transformed in contemporary research environments.
The research investigates how scientists use and value capabilities such as interpreting data, stabilising phenomena, predicting outcomes, imagining models, and performing experimental laboratory techniques. It further explores how AI technologies influence these abilities—both positively and negatively—and how such changes affect scientific progress, education, and epistemic practices.
Each Research Associate will be responsible for leading a dedicated case study within the broader project framework. The role involves generating and analysing qualitative data, engaging with philosophical and sociological approaches to science, and contributing to the project’s overarching theoretical and empirical outputs.
The project is led by Professor Mike Stuart and supported by a team of experts in philosophy of science. It includes structured training in qualitative research methods and offers opportunities for collaboration, travel, and professional development within a well-funded ERC research environment. Candidates will be part of a multidisciplinary academic setting with strong emphasis on collaborative inquiry and innovative methodological approaches.
Start date is expected to be 1 September 2026 (negotiable). The appointment is full-time and fixed-term for three years.
