General Description
The University of Cambridge invites applications for a Research Associate position within the Theory of Condensed Matter group at the Cavendish Laboratory. This is a fixed-term post with funding available until 30 September 2026 in the first instance.
The position is part of a collaborative research programme involving multiple academics, including Professors B. Béri, C. Castelnovo, N. Cooper, and A. Lamacraft. The research focuses on cutting-edge topics in condensed matter theory, including thermodynamic and response properties of topological magnetic materials, emergent quantum dynamics in frustrated magnets, driven dissipative systems, topological quantum many-body systems, and quantum circuit models.
The successful candidate will conduct independent and collaborative postdoctoral research aligned with the group’s research themes. The role includes active collaboration with faculty members, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students, as well as opportunities for interdisciplinary and external collaborations.
In addition to research, the postholder will contribute to the academic life of the group by participating in seminars, assisting in the organisation of internal and external academic events, and delivering graduate-level lectures related to their research area. The group offers a vibrant and intellectually stimulating environment with regular seminars, lectures, and social activities, comprising a large community of academics, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must hold, or be close to obtaining, a PhD in Physics or a closely related discipline
Demonstrated track record of conducting and publishing high-quality research in modern condensed matter theory
Required expertise/skills
Strong background in condensed matter theory
Experience in research areas such as quantum dynamics, topological systems, or non-equilibrium phenomena is desirable
Proven ability to conduct independent research and contribute to collaborative projects
Ability to manage workload effectively and meet research deadlines
Strong communication skills, including the ability to present research findings in seminars and conferences
Capacity to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration within and beyond the department
Salary details
Research Associate: £37,174 – £45,413 per annum (Grade 7)
Candidates who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant (Grade 5) with a salary of £34,132, progressing to Research Associate upon confirmation of the PhD
