General Description
Newcastle University is offering a fully funded ReNU Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) PhD studentship focused on Sustainable Urban Futures. This studentship is part of an interdisciplinary research initiative aimed at addressing complex challenges associated with urban environments, sustainability, and resilience. The project will explore innovative strategies to improve urban living through sustainable design, energy efficiency, climate adaptation, and social inclusion.

The successful candidate will undertake original research within one of the ReNU DTP partner institutions, working collaboratively with academic supervisors and external stakeholders. The studentship includes opportunities for professional development, research training, and interdisciplinary engagement. Candidates will be expected to contribute to the production of high-quality research outputs, including journal publications and conference presentations, and participate in public engagement and knowledge exchange activities.

The studentship is full-time for up to 3.5 years, providing a supportive research environment, access to world-class facilities, and integration into a vibrant doctoral research community.

Eligibility Criteria

  • A first-class or strong upper second-class undergraduate degree, and/or a relevant Master’s degree, in a discipline related to urban studies, environmental science, engineering, social sciences, or sustainability
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in sustainable urban research or related fields
  • Ability to undertake independent, original research
  • Candidates must meet UKRI funding eligibility requirements, including residency and academic qualifications

Required Expertise/Skills

  • Strong research and analytical skills, including quantitative and/or qualitative methodologies relevant to urban sustainability
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams
  • Project management and organisational skills

Salary Details
Full funding covering UK tuition fees, a UKRI tax-free stipend (approximately £18,622 per annum), plus funding for research training and professional development
