Postdoctoral Scientist – Neurobiology (Harvey McMahon – LMB 2793)
MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (Medical Research Council, UK Research and Innovation)
Cambridge, United Kingdom
General Description
The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scientist position within the Neurobiology Division in the research group of Dr Harvey McMahon. This full-time position is offered on a fixed-term contract for two years.
The project focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying Parkinson’s disease and related synucleinopathies. The research programme aims to identify factors that slow or prevent the aggregation of alpha-synuclein, a key pathological process associated with several neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s disease (PD), multiple system atrophy (MSA), and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB).
The research group has developed a novel assay capable of detecting alpha-synuclein aggregates in disease states and early stages of aggregation in cell culture models. The successful candidate will use this model system to identify factors that enhance, inhibit, or prevent aggregation, with the goal of discovering key modulators and potential strategies to slow disease progression.
The role involves undertaking independent and collaborative research within the group, applying and developing experimental techniques, and contributing to scientific outputs. The scientist will present research findings at internal seminars and external scientific meetings, contribute to scientific discussions within the laboratory, and prepare research publications. The postholder will also support the training of PhD students and contribute to the broader mission of the institute, including public engagement activities and translating research findings toward improvements in healthcare.
The position requires the candidate to manage experimental work within the project, determine research directions in consultation with the Group Leader, and introduce or adapt new techniques across disciplines where necessary. The researcher will also ensure compliance with institutional policies, good research practices, health and safety standards, and data protection requirements.
The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology is an internationally renowned research institute known for pioneering advances in molecular biology and providing world-class scientific infrastructure, collaborative research environments, and extensive training and development opportunities.
