General Description
The African Studies Centre at the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies (OSGA), University of Oxford, is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in African Studies for a two-year fixed-term position. This is a full-time role (37.5 hours per week) at Grade 7, with a start date of 1 October 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.
This fellowship provides an exceptional opportunity for an early-career scholar to advance their postdoctoral research within a globally leading centre for African Studies. Working under the supervision of Professor Rita Abrahamsen (Chair of African Studies), the successful candidate will develop and implement an innovative and independent research programme aligned with the thematic area “Africa and the World,” focusing on Africa’s role in the contemporary global order.
The role involves conducting high-quality, original research and producing publications suitable for leading peer-reviewed journals and academic presses. The Fellow will present research findings at academic conferences and seminars, contributing to the intellectual visibility of the Centre. The postholder will also play a key role in shaping the research agenda within the thematic area, supporting the Centre’s position as a hub for cutting-edge scholarship.
Additional responsibilities include organising research seminars, contributing to conferences and collaborative academic initiatives, and participating actively in the academic life of the Centre and School. The Fellow will contribute to teaching by offering an option course aligned with their expertise and supervising master’s dissertations within the MSc in African Studies.

Eligibility Criteria
A relevant doctoral degree (PhD/DPhil) completed or near completion at the time of appointment
Doctorate must have been awarded no earlier than three years prior to 1 January 2026

Demonstrated ability to conduct independent, high-quality research
Commitment to teaching and postgraduate supervision
Required Expertise/Skills
Strong research profile with the potential to publish in leading peer-reviewed journals and academic presses
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Experience in presenting research at academic conferences and seminars
Ability to develop and lead an independent research agenda
Experience in teaching and supervising postgraduate students
Ability to collaborate effectively within academic research environments
Salary Details
Grade 7: £39,424 – £47,779 per annum
