Postdoctoral Research Associate – Cultures of Ecotechnology

General Description:
The University of York is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate to contribute to the “Cultures of Ecotechnology” project, part of the Leverhulme Centre for Anthropocene Biodiversity (LCAB). This interdisciplinary centre focuses on understanding and reshaping human interactions with biodiversity in the Anthropocene.
This role will be based within the Department of Environment and Geography and will involve close collaboration across multiple disciplines, including environmental humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. The project examines how ecological technologies (ecotechnologies) are culturally understood, developed, and deployed in response to environmental challenges, particularly biodiversity loss and climate change.
The successful candidate will undertake innovative research exploring the social, cultural, and political dimensions of ecotechnologies, contributing to conceptual development and empirical investigation. Responsibilities include designing and conducting independent research, engaging with stakeholders, contributing to interdisciplinary collaboration within LCAB, and disseminating findings through academic publications, conferences, and public engagement activities.
The postholder will also contribute to the development of funding proposals and support the broader research objectives of the Centre. This is a full-time, fixed-term position, with a planned start date no later than 30 September 2026. Eligibility Criteria:
- PhD (awarded or submitted) in a relevant discipline such as environmental humanities, geography, sociology, anthropology, science and technology studies, or related fields
Required Expertise/Skills:
- Strong background in interdisciplinary research related to environment, technology, and society
- Experience in qualitative research methods and/or critical theoretical approaches
- Ability to conduct independent research and contribute to collaborative projects
- Proven or emerging track record of high-quality academic publications
- Experience presenting research at academic conferences or public forums
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to engage with a range of stakeholders, including non-academic audiences
- Experience or interest in contributing to grant writing and funding applications
Salary Details:
£37,694 per year (Grade 6)
