Post-doctoral Research Associate/Fellow – Practical Methods for Spatial Energy System Planning

University of Strathclyde

Glasgow, United Kingdom

General Description – include all relevant details from the source
The University of Strathclyde’s Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering invites applications for the position of Post-doctoral Research Associate/Fellow to contribute to research on practical methods for spatial energy system planning. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary research team focused on developing advanced analytical approaches that support the planning and deployment of low-carbon energy systems.

The role involves developing and applying spatial modelling and analytical methods to support energy system planning and decarbonisation strategies. The postholder will work with energy system data, modelling frameworks, and spatial planning tools to investigate how energy infrastructure and technologies can be optimally deployed across regions. The research will support decision-making for policymakers, planners, and stakeholders involved in the energy transition.

Key responsibilities include undertaking high-quality research in spatial energy system modelling and planning; developing practical and scalable modelling approaches; analysing spatial energy demand and supply data; contributing to interdisciplinary research collaborations; producing high-quality publications in leading academic journals; preparing reports and presentations for stakeholders and project partners; supporting knowledge exchange activities; and contributing to the wider research objectives of the project and department. The postholder will work closely with academic colleagues and project collaborators to ensure the research outputs contribute to practical and policy-relevant energy system planning tools.

Eligibility Criteria
Candidates must hold, or be close to completing, a PhD in a relevant discipline such as energy systems, engineering, environmental science, geography, applied mathematics, or a related field. Applicants should demonstrate strong research capability in spatial modelling, energy systems analysis, or related analytical areas. Experience working with spatial datasets and modelling tools relevant to energy planning is expected.

Required expertise/skills
Strong analytical and quantitative research skills.
Experience with spatial modelling, geospatial analysis, or energy systems modelling.
Experience working with energy supply, demand, or infrastructure datasets.
Proficiency in programming or analytical tools such as Python, R, MATLAB, or similar platforms.
Ability to develop and implement modelling frameworks for spatial or energy system analysis.
Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to publish research outputs and present findings to academic and stakeholder audiences.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within interdisciplinary research teams.
Experience contributing to research publications, reports, or knowledge exchange activities is desirable.
