General Description
The University of Lancashire’s School of Engineering and Computing invites applications for a funded PhD (via MPhil) studentship focused on the development and evaluation of a metacognitive training intervention in the context of aviation. This research studentship offers an immersive opportunity to investigate how metacognitive strategies can be designed, implemented, and assessed to enhance cognitive performance and decision‑making within aviation environments. The successful candidate will undertake independent research under expert supervision, contributing original scholarship to a cross‑disciplinary area that bridges engineering, human factors, and cognitive training methodologies. This position forms part of the University’s postgraduate research programme and includes engagement with academic and potentially industry partners.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants should normally hold, or be expected to obtain, a minimum of an upper‑second class honours degree (2:1) or equivalent in a relevant discipline. Relevant subject backgrounds may include engineering, aviation, human factors, psychology, cognitive science, or closely related fields that support research into metacognitive processes and training interventions. Candidates should demonstrate strong academic potential and an ability to undertake research at doctoral level.
Required Expertise/Skills
A solid foundation in research design and methodological principles appropriate for applied cognitive or engineering research.
Demonstrated analytical skills and the ability to critically engage with interdisciplinary literature.
Effective communication skills for academic writing and presentations.
Motivation for sustained independent research and the ability to work collaboratively with a supervisory team.
Experience in aviation contexts, human factors, training intervention development, or cognitive psychology research is desirable.
Salary Details
This studentship offers a stipend at a rate of £21,805 per annum.
