PhD Studentship: Protecting Privacy While Preventing Wandering in People Living with Mild Dementia

University of Plymouth

Plymouth, United Kingdom

The University of Plymouth is offering a fully funded PhD studentship focused on addressing the critical challenge of balancing safety and privacy for individuals living with mild dementia. This interdisciplinary research project aims to explore innovative solutions to prevent wandering—a common and potentially dangerous behavior in dementia—while safeguarding personal autonomy and privacy.

The project will investigate ethical, technological, and healthcare dimensions of monitoring and intervention systems designed for individuals with mild dementia. The successful candidate will engage in research that evaluates existing assistive technologies, develops privacy-preserving approaches, and considers the lived experiences of patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals. The research is expected to contribute to policy, clinical practice, and technological design frameworks that enhance quality of life while maintaining dignity and independence.

The candidate will be supervised by an experienced academic team and will work within a collaborative research environment that spans healthcare, psychology, and digital technology disciplines. The studentship provides opportunities for interdisciplinary training, engagement with stakeholders, and participation in academic dissemination activities.
