General Description:
The University of Plymouth is offering a postgraduate research studentship focused on the development of next-generation biodegradable microneedle electrodes for continuous heart monitoring. This project combines biomedical engineering, materials science, and electronics to create innovative wearable technologies for non-invasive, long-term cardiovascular monitoring.
The research involves designing and fabricating biodegradable microneedle electrode devices capable of accurately capturing cardiac signals over extended periods. The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary team, integrating expertise from bioelectronics, nanotechnology, and clinical sciences to develop practical and biocompatible monitoring solutions.
Key responsibilities include experimental research, device prototyping, testing and characterisation of electrodes, data acquisition and analysis, and contributing to scientific publications and conference presentations. The candidate will also engage in interdisciplinary collaboration to ensure translational potential for healthcare applications.

Eligibility Criteria:
- A first-class or upper second-class honours degree (or equivalent) in Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science, Electronic Engineering, or a closely related discipline
- A relevant master’s degree is desirable but not essential
- Strong interest in biomedical device development, bioelectronics, or wearable healthcare technologies
- Ability to conduct independent research and collaborate across disciplines
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal
- International applicants must meet the University’s English language requirements
