General Description
Birkbeck, University of London invites applications for a combined PhD Studentship and Graduate Teaching Assistant position within the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences. This is a four-year fixed-term opportunity designed for candidates seeking to undertake full-time doctoral research while gaining valuable teaching experience in a leading research-intensive academic environment.
The successful candidate will be enrolled as a full-time PhD (MPhil/PhD) student, with tuition fees waived for the duration of the programme. Alongside their research, the candidate will work part-time (17.5 hours per week during term time) as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, supporting teaching delivery, leading seminars (primarily online), marking assessments, and assisting with academic administration.
The School has a long-standing reputation in computing and mathematical sciences, with research strengths in areas such as artificial intelligence, data science, algorithms, databases, and logical methods. Research opportunities span a wide range of topics including machine learning, natural language processing, graph databases, cryptography, probability theory, and network algorithms.

Eligibility Criteria
- A good first degree and/or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related discipline
- Eligibility for admission to the MPhil/PhD programme in the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences
- Submission of a full PhD application including an original research proposal
- Demonstrated potential to conduct high-quality research in relevant fields
Required Expertise/Skills
- Strong foundation in computer science, mathematics, statistics, or probability theory
- Practical knowledge of Python programming and SQL
- Understanding of Information Systems and Data Management
- Ability to support teaching at postgraduate level, including online delivery
- Strong organisational, administrative, and communication skills
- Capability to meet deadlines and contribute to academic programme delivery
Salary Details
- £19,490 rising to £22,123 per year (0.5 FTE)
- Equivalent full-time salary: £38,981 to £44,247 (pro-rated)
- Includes London weighting allowance as per Grade 6 pay scale
