PhD Studentship: Agentic AI and Intelligent Autonomous Systems
Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship in the Department of Computer Science at City St George’s, University of London, offered in partnership with industry. The successful candidate will work on Agentic Artificial Intelligence—the next generation of AI systems capable of reasoning, autonomous decision-making, task orchestration, and multi-agent collaboration.
The PhD researcher will join an active research group specializing in AI, blockchain, federated learning, trust frameworks, and intelligent systems. This project provides an outstanding opportunity for a technically strong candidate to contribute to cutting-edge research and help establish the foundations of trustworthy, adaptive, and self-improving agentic systems.
Key Research Focus Areas:
Autonomous multi-agent systems for real-world decision-making.
Agentic Large Language Models (LLMs) with planning, tool use, and self-evaluation capabilities.
Cognitive architectures for self-reflective, self-improving AI.
Data-driven agents for reasoning, forecasting, and knowledge integration.
Safe, transparent, and privacy-preserving agent-based AI.
Application Requirements & Guidelines:
A research proposal is not required; applicants must submit a CV clearly demonstrating how their background, qualifications, and experience align with the advertised research scope.
CV must demonstrate relevant experience in Conversational AI (e.g., voice-based AI systems, chatbots, conversational agents, or related technologies).
No formal approval from a supervisor is required prior to applying.

First or upper second-class BEng and MEng (or equivalent, or higher) degree in Computer Science or a related discipline.
Demonstrated aptitude for original research.
Prior experience in Conversational AI (applicants without prior experience in Conversational AI are unlikely to be considered).
Required Skills & Expertise:
Strong foundation in Python programming.
Hands-on experience with deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.
Background in Natural Language Processing (NLP)—including model development, fine-tuning, or evaluation (given special consideration).
Demonstrated research experience in AI, machine learning, or NLP.
Published work in reputable conferences or journals (desirable).
Outstanding academic performance in relevant modules or degrees.
Strong motivation to work on cutting-edge research in Agentic AI.
Tuition fees covered plus an annual tax-free stipend of £23,805 (increased annually at UKRI rate) for 3 years.
