General Description
Dublin City University’s School of Theology, Philosophy, and Music invites outstanding applicants to compete for fully funded four‑year PhD scholarships across disciplines including Theology, Philosophy and Music. The School is recognised for its interdisciplinary research environment, world‑class faculty, and commitment to social and cultural engagement. These scholarships support full‑time doctoral research and provide access to a vibrant academic community where students will develop advanced research skills and contribute to scholarship in their chosen field. Scholarships are open to EU, UK and international candidates.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must hold a first‑class honours undergraduate degree or at least a 2:1 in a relevant discipline (e.g., Theology, Religious Studies, Philosophy, Music, or related fields) and a relevant Master’s degree; candidates completing Master’s studies may also apply. Evidence of academic excellence and research potential is required.

Required Expertise/Skills

  • Demonstrated academic strength in the relevant subject area (Theology, Philosophy, or Music).

  • A well‑developed research proposal aligned with School research interests.

  • Ability to engage in independent research, including literature review, methodology development, and written communication.

  • For Music applicants: portfolio materials (e.g., scores or recordings) may be requested if relevant to the research topic.

Areas of Research Interest
Scholarship topics span a broad range including but not limited to:

  • Ethics and Applied Ethics; Philosophy of Religion; Interreligious Dialogue; Theological Ethics

  • Philosophy (including European Philosophy) and Religion, Society & Culture

  • Musicology (across genres), Applied Musicology, Choral Studies, Music in Digital Cultures including AI, Contemporary Music, Irish Traditional Music, Music Cognition, Jazz/Popular Music Theory, Film Music and Sound.

Salary Details
Scholarships include a competitive annual stipend (approximately €25,000 plus full fees) for up to four years, subject to satisfactory progress.
