PhD Research Fellow in Sociology – Punishment as a Vehicle for Change
University of Oslo
Oslo, Norway
General Description
The University of Oslo is inviting applications for a PhD Research Fellow position in Sociology as part of the research project “Punishment as a Vehicle for Change.” This position is based within the Department of Sociology and Human Geography and offers an opportunity to contribute to an innovative research agenda examining the transformative potential of punishment within contemporary societies.
The project explores how punishment practices—such as incarceration, rehabilitation programmes, and alternative sanctions—can function as mechanisms for individual and social change. The successful candidate will engage in theoretically grounded and empirically driven research, investigating the social, institutional, and experiential dimensions of punishment.
The PhD fellow will conduct independent research under academic supervision, contributing to the project’s broader objectives while developing their own doctoral thesis. Responsibilities include data collection and analysis, participation in project meetings and academic events, and dissemination of findings through publications and conferences. The candidate will also complete required coursework as part of the doctoral training programme.
The position is for a fixed term of three years (with the possibility of a fourth year including teaching duties, depending on departmental needs). The role provides access to a vibrant academic environment, interdisciplinary collaboration, and comprehensive doctoral training within one of Scandinavia’s leading universities.
