General Description –
The University of Essex is seeking to appoint a Maintenance Craftsperson (Electrical) within its Estate Management department, which is responsible for the design, repair, maintenance, and security of all university campuses. The department provides comprehensive support services to students, staff, and visitors, ensuring the effective operation of facilities and infrastructure.
The successful candidate will work on electrical systems in accordance with the University’s low-voltage (LV) policy. Responsibilities include diagnosing and repairing faults in complex electrical installations, plant, and equipment, as well as carrying out inspection and testing in line with BS 7671 18th Edition standards. The role involves installation of new plant, equipment, and services, along with executing planned and preventative maintenance (PPM) programs. The post holder will be expected to interpret manuals, drawings, and specifications and work independently without direct supervision.
The role operates on a 36-hour work week across a shift system between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM. Weekend work is required on a rotational basis (approximately one in six weekends), and participation in an on-call rota (approximately one week in twelve) is expected. The position is available for both Competent Person (CP) and Authorised Person (AP) levels.
Eligibility Criteria –
Completion of a recognised qualification or training aligned with BS 7671 18th Edition
NVQ Level 2 in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline (or equivalent)
Required Expertise/Skills –
Demonstrated experience in maintenance of three-phase and single-phase electrical systems across commercial, industrial, and domestic environments
Ability to diagnose and resolve faults in complex electrical systems
Experience in installation of electrical systems and equipment is advantageous
Strong communication skills and ability to work independently
Willingness to learn new working methods and demonstrate flexibility in operations
Salary Details –
£29,959 to £33,482 per annum
(£31,637 – £33,482 for Authorised Person or £29,959 – £31,637 for Competent Person, plus £1,168.45 on-call allowance)
