The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) is seeking to appoint an LSE Fellow in Qualitative Methods within its Department of Methodology. This is a full-time, fixed-term position for a duration of two years, commencing in September 2026. The Department of Methodology serves as a central hub for methodological research and teaching across the School, bringing together interdisciplinary expertise spanning sociology, anthropology, international relations, political science, statistics, economics, social psychology, social policy, and criminology.
The successful candidate will join an internationally renowned community of social science methodologists and contribute actively to the Department’s teaching and research activities. Responsibilities include delivering graduate-level teaching in research design and qualitative methods, conducting seminar teaching, leading methods surgeries, and supervising dissertations and capstone projects. The appointee will also be encouraged to collaborate on ongoing research initiatives and develop an independent research agenda. The Department has a strong track record of supporting postdoctoral fellows in progressing to tenure-track positions at leading universities globally. Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have completed, or be close to completing, a PhD in research methodology or a relevant social science discipline by the start date of the appointment. Candidates should demonstrate a strong research trajectory with the potential to produce high-quality publications in peer-reviewed outlets. A background in International Relations is particularly encouraged.
Required expertise/skills
Candidates should possess expertise in qualitative research methods and their application to empirical social science questions. A developing record of academic publications is essential. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to teach research methods and research design to interdisciplinary student groups, supervise postgraduate research, and contribute to course development. Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required, along with a commitment to high-quality teaching, inclusive learning environments, and collaboration with academic and professional staff. Experience or interest in areas such as discourse analysis is desirable.
Salary details
£43,277 to £51,714 per annum inclusive of London allowance, with potential progression to £55,497 per annum. The role also includes an occupational pension scheme, generous annual leave, and access to training and development opportunities.
