Environmental Macro Economist – Marine Socio-Economics Research Role

National Oceanography Centre (NOC)

Southampton, United Kingdom or Liverpool, United Kingdom

The National Oceanography Centre (NOC) is recruiting an Environmental Macro Economist to join its interdisciplinary research teams focused on marine science, sustainable ocean economy, and environmental-economic systems. This role sits within the Seafloor Ecosystems Group and contributes to the organisation’s Sustainable Marine Economy mission, supporting research that informs national and international marine policy and environmental decision-making.

The position focuses on applying macroeconomic and environmental-economic modelling approaches to evaluate the value of marine ecosystems and restoration activities. The successful candidate will initially contribute to the EU-funded REDRESS project, which examines the economic impacts of deep-sea habitat restoration. The role involves using Input-Output modelling techniques to quantify economic effects and broader socio-economic outcomes of marine ecosystem interventions.

Beyond the initial project, the role will expand into wider research areas including blue carbon valuation, natural capital accounting, offshore energy systems, marine food security, and ecosystem restoration economics. The postholder will collaborate with international research partners, interdisciplinary teams, and policy stakeholders, contributing to evidence-based marine resource management.

The role also includes academic dissemination responsibilities, including publication in peer-reviewed journals, presentation at international conferences, and contribution to research proposals and funding applications. The position offers opportunities for career development within a leading marine science institution.

Eligibility Criteria:
• Candidates must hold a PhD (or equivalent research experience) in Environmental Economics, Macroeconomics, or a closely related discipline
• Strong evidence of research output such as peer-reviewed publications or equivalent analytical reports
• Experience in economic modelling approaches such as Input-Output models, general equilibrium models, or ecosystem valuation frameworks
• Quantitative research background in economics, mathematics, or related scientific discipline

Required Expertise/Skills:
• Strong knowledge of environmental economics and macroeconomic analysis
• Experience in natural capital valuation, ecosystem services, or resource economics
• Proficiency in quantitative modelling and data analysis tools (e.g., R, Python, MATLAB, or STATA)
• Ability to integrate economic analysis with environmental and ecological systems
• Strong academic writing and publication skills
• Experience working in interdisciplinary research teams
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
• Ability to contribute to research proposals and funding applications
