The University of Birmingham is recruiting an Assistant or Associate Professor (Research and Education) for a permanent, full-time academic role within its faculties. The appointment will reinforce the School’s excellent research profile and commitment to outstanding educational delivery across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Candidates appointed will engage in a balanced portfolio of research, teaching and service activities, contributing to the School’s strategic goals and broader academic community. The role encompasses a three-legged contract requiring excellence in research, education and administration, with a commitment to inclusive pedagogy and interdisciplinary collaboration. Applicants should demonstrate a strong track record or clear potential for high-impact research, teaching innovation, grant capture, and engagement with students and stakeholders at all levels. There are opportunities to collaborate across disciplines, and successful candidates will be expected to make a substantive contribution to the School’s research culture and educational excellence.

Eligibility Criteria

  • A completed PhD or equivalent research qualification in a relevant academic discipline.

  • Demonstrated track record in research excellence and peer-reviewed outputs; evidence of or potential for securing external research funding.

  • Commitment to delivering high-quality education, inclusive teaching practices, and student supervision.

  • Experience in academic administration and service appropriate to the level applied for.

Required expertise/skills

  • Proven ability to publish original research of high academic quality.

  • Strong pedagogical capabilities across undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

  • Effective communication skills suitable for interdisciplinary collaboration within the University and with external partners.

  • Capacity to contribute meaningfully to programme development, student assessment, and curriculum design.

Salary details 

  • Grade 8: Full-time starting salary normally ranges from £47,389 to £56,535 with potential progression once in post to £63,606.

  • Grade 9: Full-time starting salary normally ranges from £58,225 to £67,468 with potential progression once in post to £87,974.
