General Description
The UM-DAE Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences is an aided institute under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India, established in 2007 to provide a dynamic academic atmosphere for advanced research. The institute offers a full-time, multi-disciplinary Ph.D. programme designed to train students in addressing foundational and societally relevant research problems. Research is supported by state-of-the-art facilities and collaborations with premier research institutes. The programme duration is five years, including mandated UGC coursework. Successful candidates will be awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Basic Sciences, specializing in Mathematics or Physics, by the University of Mumbai. The selection process involves a merit-based written test and/or interview conducted by the respective Schools. Candidates called for the interview are entitled to to-and-fro AC-III railway fare by the shortest route. Limited on-campus accommodation (three seats for female and three for male candidates) is available for the first year for those residing outside the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, allotted strictly based on merit. Enrolled students are subject to the rules and regulations of UM-DAE CEBS and must join a mandatory Group Health Insurance Scheme. There is no application fee for this programme. Candidates must upload clear copies of their SSC, H.Sc., B.Sc., and M.Sc. mark sheets, degree certificates, and valid qualifying examination scorecards during the online process.
Eligibility Criteria
This programme is open to Indian nationals only. Applicants must hold an M.Sc. in a relevant subject area with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ on the UGC 7-point scale. A 5% relaxation in marks or grade is allowed for applicants belonging to SC, ST, and Divyangjan categories. The maximum age limit is 28 years as of December 31, 2025, with relaxations of 3 years for OBC-NCL, 5 years for SC/ST, and 10 years for Divyangjan candidates. Additionally, qualification in one of the following examinations is an essential eligibility criterion: UGC-CSIR-NET (JRF or LS), SLET, GATE, NBHM, JEST, DBT-BET, DST-INSPIRE, Teachers’ Fellowship, or the PET conducted by the University of Mumbai. The institute follows the reservation policies of the Government of India.
Required expertise/skills
- School of Physical Sciences: M.Sc. in Physics. A background in Plasma Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, or Computational Physics is considered desirable.
- School of Mathematical Sciences: M.Sc. in Mathematics. A background in Algebra, Topology, and Analysis is considered desirable.
Salary details
Selected candidates will receive a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) of ₹37,000/- per month plus 30% HRA for the first two years. Upon satisfactory performance and review, the fellowship is upgraded to a Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) from the third year onwards with a stipend of ₹42,000/- per month plus 30% HRA. Candidates are also entitled to a contingency grant of ₹60,000/- per year.
