PhD Studentship – Understanding the Rules of Life in Microbiomes Using Stable Isotope Labelling

The University of Manchester
Manchester, United Kingdom

This fully funded PhD studentship at The University of Manchester offers a unique opportunity to explore how the dynamics of microbial communities govern the functions and stability of microbiomes, with a particular focus on resource sharing and metabolic interactions using cutting‑edge stable isotope labelling techniques. Situated within the Department of Chemistry, the project will integrate advanced experimental approaches with data‑intensive analysis to uncover the fundamental “rules of life” that shape microbial community behaviour. As part of a multidisciplinary research team, you will develop robust methods for compound‑specific, multi‑isotope metabolite analysis, leverage state‑of‑the‑art mass spectrometry facilities and contribute to extending scientific understanding of microbiome function that has implications for environmental sustainability and biotechnology. This studentship is embedded within a larger funded programme that supports training, collaboration and research excellence.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants should hold, or be expected to achieve, at least a 2:1 honours degree (or international equivalent), or a relevant master’s qualification, in a science or engineering discipline such as chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, environmental science, or a related field that equips them to undertake interdisciplinary microbial research.

Required Expertise, Skills
• A solid academic background in the natural sciences with evidence of laboratory competence.
• Familiarity or keen interest in analytical chemistry, metabolite analysis, microbiology or data‑intensive research methods is beneficial.
• Capacity for rigorous scientific thinking, problem‑solving and working within a collaborative research environment.

Salary Details
The studentship includes a UKRI‑standard annual tax‑free stipend (for example, set at £20,780 for the 2025/26 academic year) with full coverage of tuition fees.

Application Deadline
