Research Officer in Cosmology and the Edge of the Universe (Philosophy of Physics 2)

London School of Economics and Political Science – Centre for Philosophy of Natural and Social Science
London, England, United Kingdom

This fixed-term research position invites an intellectually driven scholar to join the Centre for Philosophy of Natural and Social Science (CPNSS) at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) as a Research Officer focusing on cosmology and the “edge of the universe” within the philosophy of physics. The role is embedded in the ERC-funded Philosophical Foundations of the Edge of the Universe (EDGE) project, led by Professor Bryan W Roberts, offering a unique platform to engage with foundational questions at the intersection of physics and philosophy. The CPNSS provides a vibrant intellectual environment where researchers collaborate across disciplines to explore deep conceptual issues in science and society, and this position plays a key part in advancing the EDGE project’s cosmology strand over a three-year period.

General Description
The successful candidate will conduct innovative research as part of the EDGE research team, working closely with the principal investigator and collaborators at other institutions. While contributing broadly to the project’s ambitions, the primary focus will be on topics in the philosophy of cosmology — especially those relating to gauge and boundary conditions and their significance for understanding the universe’s edges. This role blends independent research with collaborative engagement, enhancing the project’s broader investigations into the philosophical foundations of cosmology and the universe’s conceptual limits.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants should have successfully completed, or be close to completing, a PhD in Philosophy or the Foundations of Physics by the required start date. A strong academic record and clear evidence of rigorous philosophical research are expected.

Required Expertise, Skills
The ideal candidate will possess well-developed research interests in the philosophy of cosmology and the philosophy of physics, with an ability to articulate and pursue a significant programme of research within the context of the EDGE project. The ability to work both independently on specific project tasks and collaboratively within a research team is essential. Excellent communication skills and the capacity to engage with interdisciplinary scientific collaborators will support the impact of the research.

Salary Details
The role is funded for three years with a salary range from £43,277 to £49,573 per annum, with potential progression up to £51,714 inclusive of London allowance.

Application Deadline
The closing date for applications is 15 March 2026 (23:59 UK time).
