PhD Studentship – Exhibiting the Ocean: How Communication Strategies Influence Attitudes and Behaviour Toward Marine Conservation
University of Hull
Kingston upon Hull, United Kingdom
General Description – including all available relevant information of this position
The University of Hull is offering a fully funded PhD studentship focused on understanding how different communication strategies shape public attitudes, emotional engagement and behavioural responses toward marine conservation. Based within the Ocean Literacy research cluster, this project explores how immersive exhibits, interactive technologies and multisensory experiences — such as those found in aquariums, science centres and museums — influence people’s connection to and concern for the ocean and its diverse species. The student will apply experimental research methods to assess audience engagement with varied communication approaches, examining how perceptions of both charismatic and overlooked marine animals affect conservation concern and willingness to support protective actions. This doctoral research promises to generate insights that can inform more effective conservation communication, informal science learning, and environmental policy engagement, contributing to broader efforts to enhance Ocean Literacy. The studentship includes access to the University’s Postgraduate Training Scheme, providing structured development in advanced research skills and professional preparation alongside the PhD.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants should hold a minimum of a 2:1 undergraduate degree in marine biology, marine ecology or a closely related subject. A prior taught MSc or a Master’s by thesis in a relevant discipline is an advantage. Candidates should demonstrate interest at the intersection of marine biology, conservation and communication, and be prepared to undertake fieldwork safely and responsibly as required by the research. Proficiency in or willingness to develop skills in both quantitative and qualitative data analysis is expected.
Require expertise, skills
Successful candidates will bring strong academic foundations in their discipline, an aptitude for interdisciplinary research, and an interest in how communication influences understanding and behaviour. Ability to engage with diverse research methods, collaborative work with partners and stakeholders, and the capacity to contribute meaningfully to experimental design and analysis are key attributes for this role.
Salary details
The studentship provides a fee waiver covering tuition at the UK (home) rate and an annual maintenance grant aligned with UKRI standards (e.g., approximately £20,780 per year) for up to three years of full-time study. International applicants should note that additional funds may be required to cover the difference between home and international fees.
