University of Liverpool
Liverpool, United Kingdom

This exciting full-time fixed-term appointment invites an enthusiastic and skilled early-career researcher to join the Department of Physics at the University of Liverpool on a cutting-edge project in particle physics detector research and development. Within a programme supported by the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), the role focuses on the development and production of the Mighty-Tracker sub-detector for the LHCb experiment at CERN during Long Shutdown 4. You will be part of a collaborative UK-led effort that includes international partners, contributing to design, assembly, quality assurance and performance evaluation of advanced silicon tracking detector technologies that will operate in high-rate, high-radiation environments. The position is available until 30 September 2027.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants should hold a PhD in experimental particle physics or a closely related field; if you are awaiting your PhD award, an initial appointment at the appropriate grade will be made with promotion upon confirmation of your degree. A strong research track record in detector R&D and performance studies is expected.

Required Expertise, Skills
The role requires experience in one or more of the following: silicon detector research and development; mechanical assembly and integration of detector components; development and implementation of electro-mechanical quality control procedures; evaluation of detector components; and readout electronics development. Experience with monolithic silicon technologies and involvement in large-scale detector projects is highly desirable. Excellent teamwork, communication and practical laboratory skills are important for success. Higher grade applicants should demonstrate an established research profile with significant contributions to detector development.

Salary Details
The salary for Grade 7 is £39,906 – £46,049 per annum; for Grade 8 it is £47,389 – £59,966 per annum. Candidates awaiting PhD award may be appointed initially at Grade 6, with progression upon confirmation of the PhD.
