Research Associate in the Politics of Military Labour Association in Europe
The University of Sheffield is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate to contribute to the delivery of a research project on the politics of military labour association and military unionisation in Europe. Funded by a standard grant from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), this project is based in the School of Sociological Studies, Politics and International Relations and led by Dr. Joanna Tidy.
This post offers an excellent opportunity for a postdoctoral researcher to undertake research at the intersection of critical military studies, critical and feminist international relations, and political economy. The post holder will contribute to the development of scholarship on the politics of military labour, as well as associated knowledge exchange and impact activities.
Primary duties and responsibilities include reviewing and synthesising academic literature, gathering data through interviews and the curation of text corpora from contemporary and archival sources, conducting qualitative data analysis, leading and supporting knowledge exchange and impact initiatives, assisting with event organisation, and authoring research outputs for both academic and non-academic audiences.
The successful candidate will join a large, collegial School and become part of an internationally recognised research community, with opportunities to engage with active research clusters (such as political economy or international politics) and participate in interdisciplinary collaboration across the Faculty and University.
Must hold a PhD (at or near completion) in politics, international relations, political economy, or a cognate field.
Specialized expertise in military power, military work and labour, the politics of unions, and/or critical and feminist approaches.
Demonstrated experience in producing high-quality research and writing, with the proven ability to write effectively for varied audiences.
Solid experience in qualitative social science methodologies.
Effective communication skills and the ability to contribute to event organisation.
Proven ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
Desirable: Prior experience working with non-academic partners and stakeholders.
