Research Assistant / Research Associate – AHRC Project: Edinburgh Festival Fringe Economic Impact Assessment

The University of Glasgow is inviting applications for the position of Research Assistant / Research Associate to contribute to an AHRC-funded research project titled “The Edinburgh Festival Fringe: An Economic Impact Assessment.” The role is based within the School of Critical Studies and involves working under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, Professor Murray Pittock.

The project focuses on developing a robust evidence base to assess the economic and cultural impact of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The successful candidate will play a key role in conducting applied research on the creative and performing arts economy and the tourism sector. The research findings will directly inform policy discussions and reports intended for stakeholders such as the Scottish Government, local authorities, and cultural organizations.

The role involves designing and conducting surveys and interviews, managing and analyzing research data, and ensuring compliance with ethical and data protection standards. The postholder will contribute to the preparation of academic publications, policy reports, and presentations at conferences, seminars, and public engagement events. The role also includes participation in research dissemination activities and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders across the cultural and policy sectors.

For candidates appointed at Research Associate (Grade 7) level, additional responsibilities include leading aspects of research design and delivery, contributing to funding applications, supervising junior researchers or students, and taking a more independent role in research output development and project management.

Eligibility Criteria

  • A good honours degree (SCQF Level 10 or equivalent) in a relevant discipline such as economics, geography, cultural studies, tourism studies, or a related field
  • For Research Associate (Grade 7): a PhD (or equivalent professional experience) in a relevant subject area
  • Strong understanding of the creative and performing arts economy, tourism industry, or economic impact analysis
  • Experience in applied or academic research relevant to the project area

Required Expertise/Skills

  • Strong quantitative and/or qualitative research skills
  • Experience in survey design, interviews, and data analysis
  • Ability to manage and interpret complex datasets
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to engage with stakeholders in policy, cultural, and academic contexts
  • Experience in academic writing and contribution to publications
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a research team

Salary Details

  • Grade 6: £33,951 – £37,694 per annum
  • Grade 7: £41,064 – £46,049 per annum
