The University of Oxford is recruiting a Research Associate to contribute to cutting-edge research in computational biology, protein modelling, and machine learning methods for protein analysis and design. The position is offered on a full-time fixed-term contract for 21 months, with a latest end date of 31 March 2028. The successful candidate will join a highly interdisciplinary research environment focused on advancing computational approaches to biological systems.

The role involves developing and applying machine learning techniques to protein-related datasets, with a strong emphasis on high-performance computing and algorithmic innovation. The postholder will contribute to research on protein structure and function prediction, protein design methodologies, and computational frameworks that support biological discovery. Responsibilities include conducting independent and collaborative research, producing scientific publications, and contributing to the development of new research ideas and funding proposals.

The position requires close collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, supporting the integration of computational methods with biological insights. The role also includes communicating research outcomes through academic papers, conferences, and internal collaborations.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • A PhD (or near completion) in Computer Science, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, or a closely related discipline
  • Strong background in machine learning, computational modelling, or protein biology
  • Demonstrated experience in independent research within an academic or industrial environment
  • Evidence of scientific writing and publication potential

Required Expertise/Skills:

  • Strong proficiency in Python programming
  • Experience in high-performance computing environments
  • Knowledge of computational biology or protein modelling
  • Experience developing machine learning methods for biological or protein-related applications
  • Ability to conduct independent research and contribute to collaborative projects
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and conceptual thinking skills
  • Effective communication skills for interdisciplinary collaboration and scientific dissemination

Salary Details

Pay scale: Research Grade 7
Salary range: £39,424 – £43,984 per annum (with potential adjustment depending on experience and internal grading)
