PhD Programme – Doctoral Research Opportunities

University of Reading
Reading, United Kingdom

General Description
The University of Reading invites applications for its PhD and doctoral research programmes across a wide range of academic disciplines. These programmes are designed to support candidates in developing advanced research skills and contributing original knowledge within their chosen field.

Doctoral candidates will engage in independent, high-quality research under the supervision of experienced academic staff within the University’s schools and departments. Applicants may either apply for advertised PhD projects with predefined research topics or propose their own research aligned with the expertise of the University’s academic faculty.

The PhD programme emphasizes the creation and interpretation of new knowledge, systematic understanding of a subject area, and the ability to design and implement innovative research projects. Candidates will be expected to produce work of publishable quality and demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of relevant research methodologies and techniques.

Applicants are encouraged to identify a suitable supervisor and research area prior to application. In many cases, particularly for self-defined research topics, submission of a structured research proposal is required. The proposal should outline research objectives, methodology, relevance, and feasibility within the programme timeframe.

Applications are submitted through the University’s central online portal, where candidates must provide academic transcripts, supporting documents, and details of referees. Shortlisted applicants may be invited for an interview as part of the selection process.

PhD programmes typically commence at the start of the academic year, most commonly in September, although flexible start dates may be available depending on the department and research project.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants should hold a minimum of a 2:1 undergraduate degree (or international equivalent) in a relevant subject area. In many disciplines, particularly in the arts, humanities, social sciences, and business, a master’s degree is typically required or strongly preferred.

International applicants must meet English language proficiency requirements, generally a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 overall, with some departments requiring a score of 7.0.

Candidates must demonstrate the ability to undertake independent research and meet the academic standards required for doctoral-level study.

Required Expertise/Skills
Strong academic background in a relevant discipline, with the ability to conduct independent and original research.

Skills in critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and academic writing are essential.

Applicants should demonstrate the ability to design research methodologies, evaluate existing literature, and contribute to scholarly discussions within their field.

Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with supervisors and research teams are also important.
