Birmingham City University is offering a PhD studentship focused on “Digital Systems Governance for Smart Sustainable Green Innovation Districts,” with a specific emphasis on designing a Living Lab framework for the Birmingham Knowledge Quarter. The project will explore how digital systems can be governed effectively to support the development of green innovation districts, using the Birmingham Knowledge Quarter as a case study. The successful candidate will investigate governance models, stakeholder engagement strategies, and the integration of digital technologies to enable sustainable urban transformation. A key component of the research involves developing and applying a Living Lab framework, facilitating real-world experimentation, collaboration, and co-creation among stakeholders including academia, industry, government, and local communities.
The candidate will undertake independent and supervised research, including literature review, qualitative and/or quantitative data collection, and analytical modelling. The role includes engaging with external partners, contributing to interdisciplinary research initiatives, and disseminating findings through academic publications, conferences, and stakeholder engagement activities. The studentship is embedded within a supportive research environment with access to relevant expertise, facilities, and professional development opportunities.
Eligibility Criteria:
Applicants should hold, or expect to achieve, a good honours degree (minimum 2:1 or equivalent) in a relevant discipline such as digital systems, urban studies, environmental science, governance, innovation studies, or a related field. A postgraduate qualification in a relevant area is desirable. Candidates must meet the university’s English language requirements where applicable.
Required expertise/skills:
Candidates should demonstrate an interest in digital innovation, sustainability, and urban governance. Strong research and analytical skills are required, along with the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Experience or familiarity with research methods, stakeholder engagement, and interdisciplinary research is advantageous. Good communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential, as is the ability to manage a long-term research project effectively.
