Postdoctoral Fellow – Johnson Lab

The Francis Crick Institute
London, United Kingdom

The Francis Crick Institute is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Johnson Lab, working on cutting-edge research focused on understanding how Mycobacterium tuberculosis survives drug treatment. This full-time, fixed-term position is offered for four years and is based at the Crick’s state-of-the-art research facility in central London.

The project integrates molecular genetics, chemical biology, and data science to investigate how gene expression variability contributes to drug-tolerant bacterial subpopulations. The successful candidate will employ advanced techniques including CRISPR interference (CRISPRi)-based genetic screens and single-cell approaches. The role involves leading experimental design, developing innovative methodologies, analysing large-scale datasets, and contributing to high-impact scientific publications.

The postholder will work within the Systems Chemical Biology of Infection and Resistance Laboratory, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team supported by major funders including UKRI, BBSRC, and the Gates Foundation. In addition to research responsibilities, the fellow will contribute to training activities, support a collaborative lab culture, and engage with the wider Crick scientific community, which comprises over 1,000 researchers dedicated to improving understanding of human health and disease.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline such as molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or a related field. Candidates should demonstrate a strong track record of research excellence and the ability to work independently within an interdisciplinary environment.

Required expertise/skills
Expertise in molecular biology, microbiology, or related life sciences is essential. Experience with genetic screening approaches, CRISPR technologies, single-cell methods, or computational/data analysis is highly desirable. Applicants should possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills, the ability to handle complex datasets, and a proven capacity to contribute to scientific publications. Excellent communication, teamwork, and organisational skills are required, along with a commitment to collaborative and innovative research.
