General Description:
The University of York invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position within the Leverhulme Centre for Anthropocene Biodiversity (LCAB), an interdisciplinary research centre focused on understanding the evolving relationship between humanity and the natural world and developing pathways toward a sustainable future.

This role is embedded within the Department of Biology and will be line managed by Professor Lindsey Gillson, with mentorship from experts across Biology, Archaeology, Arts & Creative Technologies, and Environment & Geography.

The successful candidate will contribute to an innovative project exploring how artificial intelligence (AI) and extended reality (XR) tools can be combined with historical and archaeological data to model and visualize future environmental scenarios. The project aims to develop interactive simulations of evolving landscapes, using datasets from North Yorkshire to create immersive experiences that support decision-making and future planning.

Key responsibilities include identifying and applying relevant technologies, developing authoring tools compatible with widely used creative software, and engaging stakeholders in co-design processes. The role also involves active collaboration with interdisciplinary teams across LCAB to advance cross-cutting research themes.

The postholder will conduct high-quality independent and collaborative research, disseminate findings through publications, conferences, and public engagement, and contribute to the development of funding proposals. The position is full-time and fixed-term, with an expected start date no later than 30 September 2026.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • PhD (awarded or submitted) in a relevant discipline

Required Expertise/Skills:

  • Experience with game engine technologies and real-time landscape or environment design
  • Proficiency in 3D modelling tools (highly advantageous)
  • Strong research and academic writing skills with the ability to publish in high-impact venues
  • Experience presenting research at conferences or similar forums
  • Excellent communication skills, including engagement with interdisciplinary and non-academic audiences
  • Ability to develop independent and collaborative research initiatives
  • Experience or potential in identifying funding opportunities and contributing to grant applications

Salary Details:
£37,694 per year (Grade 6)
