General Description
The University of Plymouth is seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Technical Specialist (Skipper) to join its Marine Station. This full-time, permanent position (37 hours per week) involves the safe and efficient operation of small commercial workboats in support of teaching and research activities.
The postholder will be responsible for ensuring compliance with all relevant maritime regulations while delivering a high standard of operational support to students, researchers, and academic staff. The role requires strong leadership, navigational expertise, and a proactive commitment to maintaining safety standards in a dynamic marine environment.
This is a varied and demanding position that may involve unsociable working hours, including occasional weekend duties and short periods away from the home port. The successful candidate will work closely with the Marine Station team and contribute to the University’s broader research and educational objectives.

Eligibility Criteria
- Valid Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Certificate of Competency (e.g., MCA Master 200 GT or RYA Yachtmaster Offshore with commercial endorsement)
- Valid ENG1 Medical Certificate
- Completion of STCW Basic Safety Training (including Personal Survival Techniques, Firefighting and Fire Prevention, Emergency First Aid, Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities, and related certifications)
- VHF Short Range Radio Certificate
Required Expertise/Skills
- Proven experience in operating small commercial vessels
- Strong navigational and seamanship skills
- Demonstrated leadership and decision-making abilities in marine environments
- Thorough understanding of maritime safety regulations and compliance requirements
- Ability to support academic and research activities effectively
- Flexibility to work varied hours, including weekends and travel when required
Salary Details
£39,906 to £46,049 per annum (Grade 7)
