University of Cambridge – Faculty of Music

Cambridge, United Kingdom

The Faculty of Music at the University of Cambridge invites applications for the position of Assistant Teaching Professor in Music (Co-Director of Performance) on a part-time basis (0.3 FTE). This is a permanent position with a proposed start date of 16 August 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The successful candidate will serve as Co-Director of Performance and will play a central role in shaping the Faculty’s performance provision. The appointee will be an instrumentalist with a high-profile international performing career whose expertise complements that of the current Co-Director, a concert and opera singer. The position aims to strengthen areas of instrumental performance that are currently underrepresented within the Cambridge music community. Candidates must have substantial experience and professional standing in the performance of Western classical music.

The role involves teaching Performance seminars and related classes, with a focus on professional practice within the Western art music tradition. The successful candidate will contribute to the organization and delivery of both curricular and extra-curricular performance activities across the Faculty. They will assist in curating established partnerships that provide teaching and chamber-music opportunities for talented instrumentalists and will oversee aspects of the Faculty’s instrument collection.

Working collaboratively with the other Co-Director of Performance, the appointee will chair and moderate the Faculty’s annual recital examinations, which typically involve around 120 students, and help manage student recital activities with administrative support. The role also includes coordinating Faculty and external performance prizes and nominations, engaging in outreach activities, and contributing to committee work and equality, diversity, and inclusion initiatives.

This is a teaching-focused role and does not include a research component.

The Faculty of Music is part of a vibrant network of musical study, research, and practice at Cambridge. It comprises 14 permanent academic staff members, 5 postdoctoral researchers, 22 affiliated lecturers, and 16 professional services staff, supporting approximately 200 undergraduate and 70 graduate students.
