Research Associate
University of Glasgow
Glasgow, United Kingdom
General Description – include all relevant details from the source
The University of Glasgow invites applications for the position of Research Associate to contribute to the GALLANT programme through the research project titled “Simultaneous Carbon Sequestration and Pollution Remediation.” The role involves working closely with Professor Caroline Gauchotte-Lindsay, Professor Cise Unluer (University of Manchester), Dr Adrian Bass, and Dr John MacDonald, alongside a multidisciplinary network of more than 50 researchers across the University’s Schools, Colleges, and Institutes, as well as 29 programme partners representing public bodies, community groups, and industry.
The central objective of the project is to remediate land, restore ecological functions, and reduce habitat fragmentation across Glasgow. This will be achieved by concurrently sequestering carbon dioxide and immobilising or mineralising contaminants present in derelict and vacant land through processes such as chemical carbonation and microbially induced carbonate precipitation.
The successful candidate will take a leading role in advancing the research objectives of the programme. Responsibilities include planning and conducting high-quality research individually and collaboratively in line with the project’s deliverables and research strategy; analysing and interpreting research data; maintaining accurate records and databases; and preparing technical reports and scholarly publications. The postholder will review relevant literature, develop appropriate research strategies, and contribute to the dissemination of research findings through conferences, seminars, and workshops.
Additional duties include contributing to the development of new research proposals and identifying potential funding opportunities; supporting collaboration with internal and external partners; mentoring students and less experienced researchers; participating in project meetings and broader School research activities; and assisting with project administration including budget and expenditure management. The role may also involve contributing to teaching-related activities where appropriate.
The post is full-time (35 hours per week) and funded for up to 14 months. The University of Glasgow requires all employees to be eligible to live and work in the United Kingdom. The role may be eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa route subject to meeting the required eligibility criteria.
The University offers an inclusive and supportive working environment, generous leave entitlement of 41 days for full-time staff, pension benefits, staff discounts, flexible working arrangements, and wellbeing initiatives including a complimentary six-month University of Glasgow Sport membership for new employees. The institution is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion and encourages applications from under-represented communities.
