General Description
The Department of Archaeology at the University of York invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Assyriology. This fixed‑term academic research role is designed for an early‑career researcher to contribute to, and develop, research in Assyriology within the department. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in independent scholarly activity aligned with Assyriological research traditions, contribute to the intellectual life of the department, and participate in relevant collaborative academic initiatives. The role is based in York with hybrid working options available. This position supports the department’s broader mission of fostering rigorous archaeological and historical inquiry into the ancient Near East and related cultures.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants should hold (or be close to completing) a PhD in Assyriology or a closely related discipline relevant to the study of Ancient Near Eastern languages, history, and culture. Demonstrated research excellence and a scholarly focus compatible with the department’s Assyriological profile will be required.
Required Expertise/Skills
Candidates must have excellent command of key ancient Near Eastern languages, specifically Sumerian and Akkadian, and show a record of research productivity appropriate to their career stage. Strong analytical skills in epigraphic and textual interpretation, competence in relevant source traditions and methodologies, and the ability to clearly communicate research findings in academic forums are essential. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary academic community is expected.
Salary Details
Salary for this position is in the range of £37,694 to £42,254 per year, on Grade 6, reflecting UK academic pay scales for research associates.
