General Description
The University of Oxford is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate to contribute to the project China TRACER (Technological Roots and Cultural Exchange Research in Early Northern China), based in the School of Archaeology at 2 South Parks Road, Oxford. This research position forms part of a major interdisciplinary project investigating technological development and cultural interaction in early northern China.

The project focuses on understanding the origins, development, and transmission of technologies in early northern China and the broader cultural exchanges that shaped technological innovation and social transformation across the region. The research aims to explore technological practices, production systems, and cultural contacts using archaeological evidence and analytical methods, contributing to broader discussions about early technological change and cross-regional interaction in East Asia.

The appointed researcher will work closely with the project team to conduct original research related to early Chinese archaeological materials and technological systems. Responsibilities include analysing archaeological data, contributing to research publications, presenting findings at academic conferences, and supporting collaborative research activities within the project. The role will also involve contributing to the broader research environment of the School of Archaeology, including engagement with interdisciplinary scholarship and participation in seminars and academic discussions.

The position is offered on a fixed-term contract for four years at 0.8 full-time equivalent. The successful candidate will be based in Oxford and will be expected to collaborate with researchers working on the China TRACER project and related archaeological and historical research initiatives. The School of Archaeology at Oxford provides a dynamic research environment with strong expertise in archaeological science, heritage studies, and global archaeology.

Eligibility Criteria

  • A PhD (or doctoral degree close to completion) in archaeology, Chinese archaeology, archaeological science, or a closely related discipline

  • Demonstrated research experience related to early Chinese archaeology or archaeological technologies

  • Evidence of the ability to conduct independent academic research within a collaborative project environment

  • Ability to contribute to scholarly publications and academic presentations

Required Expertise/Skills

  • Strong background in archaeological research relating to early China

  • Knowledge of technological studies in archaeology, including the analysis of production technologies and material culture

  • Experience with archaeological data analysis and interpretation

  • Ability to contribute to collaborative interdisciplinary research projects

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills suitable for academic research dissemination

  • Capacity to organise research activities and contribute to publications and conference presentations

Salary Details
£39,424 – £47,779 per annum (Grade 7), pro-rata
