General Description –
Northeastern University London, in partnership with the University of Kent (validation partner), is offering a fully funded PhD scholarship in Computer Science focused on Hardware-Software Co-Design for Efficient AI in IoT and Networked Systems. This full-time doctoral research opportunity spans 3.5 years, beginning in October 2026, and is open to both UK and international applicants. The project is set within a vibrant research environment on the banks of the River Thames, providing access to interdisciplinary academic expertise and state-of-the-art facilities. The research will investigate scalable and energy-efficient AI accelerators designed for resource-constrained Internet of Things (IoT) and networked systems, combining innovations in AI model optimisation with emerging hardware architectures. The successful candidate will engage with simulation, emulation, and profiling tools to benchmark performance and energy efficiency, contributing to advancements in edge computing and intelligent systems research.

Eligibility Criteria

  • A Bachelor’s degree with a strong academic record (minimum class 2:1 or equivalent) in Computer Science, Electronics, Engineering, or a related discipline.

  • A Master’s degree in a relevant subject is desirable but not essential.

  • English language proficiency (e.g. IELTS 6.5 overall with at least 6.5 in each component) may be required for non-native speakers.

  • Applicants from all nationalities are welcome; visa support provisions should be confirmed separately.

Required expertise/skills

  • Demonstrated academic excellence in areas such as computing systems, AI, machine learning, or related technical fields.

  • Strong programming ability and problem-solving skills pertinent to hardware-software integration and optimisation tasks.

  • Capacity to undertake innovative research independently while collaborating with interdisciplinary teams.

  • Effective communication skills for technical documentation and research dissemination.

Salary details –
This scholarship provides full funding covering tuition fees, an annual stipend at UKRI research degree rates, and an additional London allowance for the duration of 3.5 years.
